Top free iPhone, iPad apps for International Women’s Day

According to a Mar. 8 report in “Times of India”, today is International Women's Day (IWD). International Women's Day is a day that celebrates respect and admiration for women along with their achievements.

Marking International Women's Day today, the United Nations calls for “eliminating violence against women”, according to the UN website. In keeping with this important goal, here are 3 free apps for your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch that will help keep women safe.

  • "YWCA Safety Alert” is designed to help women stay safe anytime and anywhere. In case of an emergency, just shake your phone or tap a simple button to set off a loud and shrill alarm to get the attention of passers-by and to scare a would be attacker. Besides setting off this alarm an emergency email message will be sent to 3 pre-set emergency contacts with your GPS location. Free.

  • "Sentinel: Women's Security” was designed to send instant alerts in case of danger like the YWCA app above. But this app has also be engineered to activate an alarm if your iPhone is switched off, if the app is exited improperly or if your network signal is lost for a specific amount of time. Free.

  • "PFO Shield” works in a similar fashion to the apps above, but has some really helpful ways to set off its alarm. For example, let's say you are wearing earbuds while you are jogging home and you need to activate the alarm. In this case all you have to do is pull your earbuds out of your iPhone (or iPad). Another way to activate the alarm is simply drop your iPhone in your handbag (releasing your iPhone sets off the alarm). Free.
