The first week of the football season in the Bay Area was filled with a lot of intrigue and many upsets. Some of the top teams in the area were either pushed to the limit or flat out pushed off the field with a loss. We examine the top four upsets of the first week of the season.
#4 Wiregrass Ranch ends their slide with win over Gulf 42-7. The Bulls were on a 22-game losing streak and possibly served notice that they will no longer be an extra bye week for teams. A great school and community support system could see Wiregrass Ranch turn into something impressive over the next few seasons or could this just be a blip on the radar and Wiregrass Ranch will go back to doormat status.
#3 Sunlake ends impressive Pasco streak with a 17-6 victory. The Sunlake defense was stout and the Pasco offense was non-existent because of it. The score was definitely a surprise because Sunlake had given up over 37 points per contest to Pasco in their previous four meetings before Friday night. Equally baffling was the ineffectiveness of all the talent Pasco possesses on offense. The Sunlake program has been on the rise since it's inception and this marks yet another step towards Pasco county equality for the program.
#2 Newsome beats Tampa Bay Tech 23-12 on the road. What was impressive is that Newsome pulled off the upset without sustained offensive success. What they did have was a very game defense and a weapon in Jr kicker Austin Cobb who accounted for the 11-point difference with field goals of 38, 33, and 34 yards and two extra-point conversions. The loss was a stunner to the Titans whom many felt have a legitimate shot at making a state title run. Can Newsome make it 2-0 versus the class of district 7A-7 when they play Gaither this Friday.
#1 Lakewood falls to Countryside 15-13. Lakewood had the hype, they had a great spring and summer, they have some great looking gear and even some additions to their team compliments of another school. What Lakewood does not have as of yet is a win. Maybe the team is still trying to gel together but nobody thought that would mean they'd lose to Countryside. It's a long season but a definite black eye for one of the "Woods".
