While we owe many modern day advance to making our lives easier it has also made it harder for us to eat a healthy diet. In fact, modernization has made our food supply abundant and convenient while lacking a lot of the nutrients we need to keep our bodies running strong. Fortunately, we also have access to an array of vitamins and supplements to help fill in the gaps. While the best way to get your vitamins and minerals is through a healthy balanced diet here are the top five supplements that you may need.

Omega 3 is important for brain health and cell function. Unfortunately, it comes up short in the average diet. This fatty acid can be found in seafood, flaxseed oil and spinach to name a few sources. Omega 3 is not produced in the body so it has to come from food sources and supplementation.

Vitamin D plays a major role in bone materialization, calcium absorption and mood health. Food sources like mushrooms are packed with vitamin D. Your body can also produce it by spending some time in the sun but many people just don’t get enough.

Calcium is not just for women; as we age we all need it to prevent brittle bones and children need it to grow. Calcium can come from dark leafy greens, black eyed peas and almonds. It’s estimated that over half of people in the U.S. are calcium deficient.

Vitamin B is another popular supplement choice. Hectic lifestyles and a less than healthy diet can lead to fatigue and many people swear by vitamin B to help put the spring back in their step. Some opposing experts argue that this only works if you’re deficient in vitamin B in the first place but, since it aids in metabolism, the way your body uses food for energy, it couldn’t hurt to top up. Good sources include organic eggs meat and dairy.

Probiotics are a good bacteria found in the digestive tract that helps keep things moving in the right direction, another valuable commodity to the modern diet. It can be found in most yogurts but if you’re not a fan, there are many supplements available in pill form.

Whether you choose to supplement or select healthy sources of these top five nutrients it’s important to stay ahead of the game when it comes to your health. Knowing what you need and how to get it can go a long way to helping you stay strong and healthy.
