Top five killer apps for Nintendo Wii

Super Smash Bros. Brawl cover.

Launching in late 2006, the Nintendo Wii is the fastest-selling video game system ever. Of course, it wouldn’t be able to sell many units without any killer app software. Here are the top five system-selling games on the Nintendo Wii

5. The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess
Twilight Princess was originally supposed to be a Gamecube-exclusive. However, Nintendo decided to delay the game so that they could developed a Nintendo Wii version. As a result, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess became a launch title for the Nintendo Wii while it was released later down the road on the Gamecube. Since most hardcore gamers want to get their hands on the next sure-fire masterpiece in the Zelda series, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess helped spur sales of the Nintendo Wii during its launch.

4. Super Mario Galaxy
Of course, it wouldn’t be a Nintendo system without a Mario game. Although Super Mario Sunshine may be a little disappointing to some, Nintendo immediately drew interest in Super Mario Galaxy by bringing the Mario universe into outer space. Thus, interest was renewed for the Nintendo Wii exclusive title. Just like numerous mainline Mario games before it, Super Mario Galaxy became a killer app on the Nintendo Wii.

3. Wii Fit
Part of the success of the Nintendo Wii has to do with its motion controller, the Wii Remote. Because some games require players to constantly move around, many players thought of the system as a fitness machine. Nintendo took advantage of this by releasing Wii Fit along with another innovative new controller called the Wii Balance Board. As expected, the killer app title attracted even more casual players to the Nintendo Wii.

2. Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Most of the older demographic in the hardcore gaming population grew up playing Nintendo games. So it was hard for them (as well as new comers) to resist the Nintendo fan boy wet dream known as Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The crossover fighting game contains abundant amount of fan service for old and new Nintendo fans. Needless to say, Super Smash Bros. Brawl sold quite a few Nintendo Wii systems.

1. Wii Sports
Wii Sports is packed into every Nintendo Wii, at least in North America. Before launch, many thought that it was little more than a showcase demo on the Nintendo Wii’s motion capabilities. When the system launched, however, Wii Sports became a phenomena with millions of casual gamers seeking out the Nintendo Wii just to play the game. Thus, Wii Sports went from being just a throwaway pack-in title to the best killer app game on the Nintendo Wii.

    man what a crap list

Better yet, how about some new stuff?

Wii Sports Resort is the new "killer app" sequel. Motion Plus, along with a lot more in-game content, make it the DEFINITIVE casual sports app by a mile. Even improves on Wii Sports stalwarts Golf & Bowling.

Metroid Prime Trilogy - yes, old games, new box. But 3 full length games on one disc for $50. And hands down the BEST FPS controls on ANY system. I defy any gamer playing first person stuff w/ 2 analog sticks to not be blown away by MP Trilogy's Wiimote/nunchuck combo. Awesome!

In terms of 3rd party music games, Guitar Hero 5 pushes the Wii in many new ways. ALWAYS connected to the 'net, expanded DLC catalog & track imports from previous titles, SDHC support up to 32GB (and the game treats the SD card just like a HDD), compatibility with most ALL music game controllers and even some modes only found on Wii (mainly DS connectivity goodies) have led most reviews to state that the Wii version is actually SUPERIOR to the 360/PS3 editions

@Superman: Crap list? Almost everything on it out sold anything else on the other consoles. May be the other console lists suck. Oh I know, you need more infinate FPS! There's just not enough of those! And why did you even click on this site if you were just gonna be negative? People like you are sad. Get a life.

Super Mario Galaxy should be number one without a doubt. And you forgot about Twilight Princess, RE4, and EXCITEBOTS

wow not one of those games are even good. well galaxy was pretty cool but the graphics were terrible. how hard would it have been to update the visuals even just a bit on the wii.

Good grief, I can't stand people who look at the white wonder machine and say that it just doesn't compare to the other two, however, it doesn't. The Wii was made to serve a different as well as the core demographic. Iwata called it more of a companion machine, and heck,it sits beside my '360 as we speak. Now, Nintendo tends to know build quality better than the other two, history dictates that, and I have seen it. I can see the majority of Xbox and Sony sales being replacements (2/3) of bum units. Also, Nintendo is the video game system innovator for any kind of digital gaming and entertainment, even though some of it did not leave Japan. Online, downloadable content, force feedback, disk media, control joystick miniaturized, memory technologies that make the Xbox and Playstation systems look like Intel 8008 technology by today's standards, proprietary optical disc technology (in co-operation with Matsushita, now Panasonic) that still has fast read speeds (SSBB excluded, partly

    Part two
...partly for being the first game using double layer discs, and possibly not being stamped for optimum read times. The technologies that Nintendo has in its Intellectual Property (IP) folder far exceed those of the other two, with the exception to Microsoft's pre-Natal and Sony's strangely more phallic than Nintendo's Wii Remote "magic wand." However, I can see these as instant failures because they did not sell them as or plan to sell them as a new system. Anyone remember Genesis and its number of expensive upgrade accessories, 32X, SEGA CD, incarnations of the console?

    Part Three
For some reason I can see Sony and Microsoft going the way of Sega, with ultra-low quality hardware since Sega had pretty robust systems; developing software for Nintendo's hardware, its new set of competitors and PC.

I have to say Jeff knows the Wii quite well too.

I look at this list with so much shame. Only SSBB n galaxy really appeal to me. Zelda i bought cos its zelda and apon completion was very disappointed maybe thats because of the false advertising Nintendo used at launch either way i bought the damn game. Nintendo has had a few great games along the way though but we all know this machine is a failure to those who kept Niny afloat during its Gamecube flop. Wii sport, resort, Fit and a few gimic games are very much loved by me for what they are but thats not why i bought the Wii. I do see big changes taking place in 2010 so ill watch the space b4 i flush my Wii down the bog.
