“Townshend says performing the finale, ‘Love, Reign O'er Me,’ is still special to him, though he recognizes how some of the songs are now very taxing on Daltrey’s vocals.” - Newsday
The Who, or what is left of them, brought their rock opera extravaganza Quadrophenia to the Nassau Coliseum last February. Other exciting and sometimes controversial happenings, Islander games excluded, have taken place out in Uniondale over the last 12 months.
So, here are the top five headline grabbing events for the Nassau Coliseum in 2013. Read em’ and weep.
From bottom to top
Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano put an end to all the guessing on Aug. 15, 2013 when he selected Forest City Ratner as the developer going forward for the contentious Coliseum project. Forest City has ties to the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, whose mastermind wooed the Islanders away from Nassau. Go figure. For that reason, Mangano’s announcement winds up at number five on the list.
The only woman to make the list is Pink. She brought "The Truth About Love Tour," her first major concert outing in four years, to the Coliseum on Mar. 25, 2013. Pink is number four.
The X Factor Live held three days of auditions, Jun. 19 through Jun. 21, 2013 at the Coliseum. Kudos and acerbic barbs flew when Paulina Rubio, Kelly Rowland and Demi Lovato joined Simon Cowell for the Long Island try-outs. The X Factor comes in at three.
Believe it or not, occupying second place in the rankings is the Spring Craft Beer Festival, held Mar. 9, 2013. The annual tasting is a popular local event that seems to grow in status, for good reason, each year. These sudsy get-togethers are well produced and a lot of fun.
Roger Daltrey, Pete Townsend and company created quite a hullabaloo when they held “An evening with The Who – Quadrophenia and more,” at the Nassau Coliseum on Feb. 21, 2013. Daltrey and Townsend can still generate an international media buzz. These godfathers of British rock are number one on the list. Would you expect anything less from a pinball wizard and a man who plays guitar like he’s Don Quixote?
