The iPhone popularized high quality audio built into a smartphone. Borrowing on their iPod DNA, Apple moved what was once a primarily corporate experience more mainstream.

Years later however, the rest of the smartphone landscape has largely caught up to Apple. Where Apple was once the only game in town for multimedia on the go, other manufacturers are now giving music, movies, and gaming the attention they deserve. One aspect of this which is crucial, but often taken for granted, is the quality of the headphone amp built into a phone. Here is our list of the top five Non-iPhone's (as of July 2014) for audio playback over headphones.

To conduct this test, we listened to Rock, Jazz, Classical, and Electronica music samples on a pair of Noble In-Ear monitors, known for being neutral, to listen for the subtle differences between the various phones we tested. Playback across all handsets were normalized to a comfortable listening level, rather than relying on the percentages offered up by each phone's volume controls. Unfortunately Sony declined to participate in this showdown. We're sure they make terrific audio hardware, but no xperia's will be ranked in this test. We simply had to make do with the best hardware available from Samsung, Motorola, Huawei, HTC, Kyocera, Nokia, and LG,
