Fourteen psychiatrists are among the top doctors in the Portland metro area, according to Portland Monthly’s rankings for 2012.
Physicians who made it onto the list represent the top 5 percent in their field, Portland Monthly said.
The annual survey includes all doctors in Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington and Clark counties, and considers factors such as experience, peer endorsements, training, research and awards.
Out of almost 6,300 doctors, only 314 made the list, including 14 psychiatrists.
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who go through the same four years of medical school as any other doctor. If needed, they could set a broken leg or deliver a baby, but they choose to specialize in psychiatry.
Unlike some other mental health professionals, psychiatrists also have prescribing privileges. In Oregon, only doctors, nurse practitioners, and clinical nurse specialists may write prescriptions. Legislation that would have allowed Oregon psychologists to prescribe medication has so far been defeated.
The survey only considers licensed MD’s and DO’s (doctors of osteopathy) and does not include acupuncturists, naturopaths, or other alternative practitioners, many of whom, Portland Monthly notes, are essential to patients’ health. And, they say, while their survey is careful and comprehensive, there are good doctors who are not on the list.
