'Top Chef' recap: the mystery of Alex continues

Tragedy struck the kitchen.

"Top Chef" to this point hasn't really had too many water-cooler moments, so maybe someone decided that they needed to create one this past elimination. After all, is there any other way people can justify why certain people are still on the show?

After the shocking exit of once-favorite Kenny, it's hard to even remember the Quickfire. The main significance of it is that the teams that were created during this challenge. Here's what we had:

  • Red Team: Ed, Angelo, Tiffany, Alex
  • Blue Team: Kevin, Kenny, Kelly, Amanda

The Blue Team won this by being mostly better-organized ... and for not having Alex on their team to over-season the fish.

Alex really is in many ways the grand mystery of "Top Chef". He's a guy who obviously has some talent -- he wouldn't operate a restaurant if he didn't -- but is somehow finding a way to mess up while doing well enough to stick around. As a matter of fact, it seems like he's more of a tool for drama than culinary skill at this point.

We saw that perfectly in the "Restaurant Wars" elimination challenge, where two teams had to devise a menu and create food in a restaurant environment for the judges. While Alex was allowed to create a few dishes, he was then sent off to be rude to the wait staff while the others cooked them.

However, his team did a great enough job cooking the food that he managed to stick around, while Kenny's team ended up losing.

This is where things get tricky. Guest judge Frank Bruni (who is so notorious as a food critic that the character in "Ratatouille" was based on him) absolutely hated Kenny's cooking, however "ambitious" that he found it. Kenny to this point has been a standout at times -- but also inconsistent, having been in the bottom twice before.

With all of this in mind, Kenny's exit from the show may not be as dramatic as it seems -- and it only seems dramatic because of the way the show has edited his rivalry with Angelo. The only real problem comes in how he managed to go before Alex, who seems to be sticking around just for drama if nothing else. Kenny probably wouldn't have won this season (nice a guy as he is) even if he stuck around, but he at least looked like a final four candidate.
