Fair warning: if you are Italian, or have strong feelings about the heritage of their storied cuisine, these revelations may shock and offend.
1.We are the birthplace of the tomato - That's right, look it up. Cortez discovered and brought back the tomato in 1519, and then Europeans grew it decoratively at first.
2.Pizza's really been around before that – Flatbreads seasoned with herbs, garlic, onion, oil, etc., then topped with meat or veggies? Yeah, the ancient Greeks were doing that.
3.Market domination – Domino's and Pizza Hut are the world's largest sellers and deliverers of pizza. Where did they originate?
4.Raw numbers – In one year, 3 billion pizzas are sold in America out of 5 billion sold worldwide. In the U.S., that equates to roughly 350 slices of pizza eaten every second.
5.Indigenous styles – America has generated its own interpretations of the pizza, including: New York thin crust, Chicago deep dish, and Detroit style (rectangular cut). These are now imitated around the world.
7.We take other culture's stuff and make it our own. It's the American way.
Have you ever tried a pizza inside a pizza?
