If you're like me, you probably like to go to places off the beat and path where you can discover little gems like cool bars, good eats, delicious drinks and mingle with interesting unpretentious folk. With that said I am devising a list of The Top Five Things to Do every weekend in hopes that you'll join me in leaving the mundane behind and transport you to a local Los Angeles gem that you never knew existed (and trust me there are many). Taken from some of my favorite event calenders like LA Weekly and LA Canvas, I hope what catches my eye will also catch yours. Inspired by High Fidelity's Top 5 Records here we go:
5. LOCK & KEY OPENS IN K-TOWN
WHAT: Lock & Key has got to be one of the coolest bars we've been to in a minute. Hidden inside an unassuming building across from the Von's on Vermont and 3rd, this swanky little haunt is our new go-to for secret meetings. You can order a Taiwanese fried-chicken sandwich with your fancy bourbon cocktail.
WHEN: Now Soft Opened, 7pm-2am, food before 9pm
WHERE: 239 S Vermont Ave Los Angeles, CA 90004
4. HATTIE STEWART POP-UP W/ NOSAJ THING
WHAT: One of our favorite left-field instrumental electro-hop DJs is spinning a free party at Space 15 Twenty at the launch of illustrator Hattie Stewart's new pop-up. Aside from the dope tunes, expect treats by Coolhaus, beer by PBR, and custom nail art by our gal-pals at Kleur. (RSVP@Space15Twenty.com)
WHEN: Friday, March 1st, 7pm-10pm
WHERE: 1520 N. Cahuenga Blvd, Los Angeles CA, 90028
3. LALUZAPALOOZA: "EVERYTHING BUT THE KITSCHEN SYNC"
WHAT: La Luz de Jesus have been putting on this juried group show annually for 27 years now. It has gone through themes which feed directly into the lowbrow, pop surrealist, graphics-infused and outsider-friendly ethos of the gallery's brand. Now, the gallery's biggest and farthest-ranging edition to date (in terms of medium, style and geography) marks its 17th year under the rubric of "Laluzapalooza: Everything but the Kitschen Sync" in a humungous group show with almost as many puns as paintings and peculiar objects. www.laluzdejesus.com
