Joining a commercial gym is not for everybody, and in fact probably only for the minority. On the other hand, finding a specialized gym that can suit your needs is a great idea. Although gyms can be a negative motivator for some, if you have the proper mindset (as in a positive, your an achiever mindset) the gym atmosphere can push you to train harder. There can also be great camaraderie at certain gyms that can urge you on.
Although this shouldn't be the main reason for going to the gym, you may find people of similar interests and attitudes there. You may even find a great workout partner to keep you coming week after week, good workout buddies are great motivators.
