Top 5 new plants for 2013 (Photos)

With the warm weather we are having during the month of January – hello, 70 degrees, what are you doing here? – many of you may be wondering what will be new in the gardening centers this year. If gardening catalogs are any indication, we should have a lot of new things to choose from. Here are 5 of my favorites:

Burpee has a new CORN seed - On Deck Hybrid – that is the first-ever sweet corn you can grow in a container. They claim the tasty breakthrough bicolor variety is perfectly sized- 4-5' tall- to spend the summer on your deck, patio, or terrace, adding vertical interest as well as producing two to three delicious 7-8"-long ears per stalk. This first-ever container-ready corn is a revolution—one you can enjoy from the comfort of your patio. Simply plant 9 seeds per 24" container and get ready to harvest in about 2 months! Supersweet (Sh2). I am looking forward to planting this in my front flower garden. I’m going to be doing vegetables in with my flowers this year.

Burpee also has a new PEPPER plant - Sweet, Candy Apple Hybrid – which is a bell pepper with flavorful, sweet, mild flesh. Its early-maturing, large 5" fruits are deep red and sugary sweet in just 71 days. It has a flavor-rich pepper that excels in salads, as snacks, and when roasted, baked or sautéed.

There is a new IMPATIENS plant in the house - (New Guinea) Hot Divine Mix Hybrid. The vivid flowers of reds, violet and orange brighten shade gardens and the beautiful tropical deep green foliage, mass the plant in uniform mounds in the garden that is shaded or has filtered sun. Plants are very low maintenance, quick to establish and flower well into fall. 12 pack of plants a great value.

There is a new PETUNIA - Blueberry Lime Jam Mix – that is great mix for containers and tubs. Pretty. Easy. Here’s a new idea in the land of petunias. By combining different varieties of petunia seeds in the same pellet, we’ve made it effortless to grow a harmonious palette of pretty petunias in your container or flowerbed. The mix features Petunia Lime Green and Petunia Midnight, compact mounting plants offering a dramatic display of gently contrasting color.

Just in time to plant SUNFLOWER houses there is Solar Flare. A dazzling flame type sunflower that has glowy, showy sunflower is an attention-getter—and a prizewinner in our trials. Dazzling flame type sunflower offers a sensuous color contrast, the dark black disk orbited by ray petals in scarlet red flame, finishing to gold at their tapered tips. Five to six feet tall, it will keep your vases ablaze with Aztec magic.
