Top 5 eco-lodging destinations for that special valentine

Looking for a low-impact getaway to surprise that special someone this Valentine’s Day? If you are up for a the drive and moderate expense, the following short list of eco-lodging destinations will make for a February to remember - of course, that is if there are any vacancies remaining.

#1   Treebones Resort, Big Sur, CA

The Treebones Resort in Big Sur (pictured above) tops the list of most romantic eco-lodging destinations due to it’s simplicity, unique yurt accommodations, and prime location. The Treebones Resort yurts are tent-like circular fabric structures with wood lattice frames - basically a luxurious camping experience on the seaward side of the Los Padres National Forest mountains.

Treebones Resort has been praised in several noteworthy publications as one of the best eco-lodging destinations in the world. The resort’s green amenities extend far beyond mere simplicity and minimal site footprints.

“We are making attempts to recycle even when it is at great personal cost. On our site, the extremely hot heat exhaust created from our clean burning, energy-producing turbines is used to heat the pool, hot tub and radiant flooring in ` the lodge, restroom and shower area” - Treebones Resort

Situated on the California Central Coast, the resort is close to fabulous recreation activities including the Los Padres National Forest, Cambria, Monterey, Hearst Castle, Wine Country and, of course, picturesque Big Sur.

A weekend getaway at the Treebones Resort is within financial and geographic reach for most Southern California residents. Ocean View yurts are less than $200 per night and - if leaving relatively early on a Friday - the drive to Big Sur should only take about five hours from Los Angeles.

#2   Alisal Ranch, Solvang, CA

For those that love outdoor and recreational excursions, such as horseback riding, golfing, lake activities, and wine tasting, Alisal Guest Ranch and Resort is the ultimate romantic getaway. Televisions, air conditioning and other in-room electronics are not found at this property as, quite frankly, there is no need for them. The beautiful Santa Barbara weather combined with endless activities allow Alisal Ranch to keep the accommodations simple while sustaining a level of guest satisfaction that is second to none.

Situated in the quaint, Dutch-style city of Solvang, Alisal Ranch is in the heart of Santa Barbara County within close proximity to Santa Barbara beaches and some of the best wine in all of California.

Due to the serene atmosphere, endless actitvities, and unbeatable guest relations, staying at Alisal Ranch is by no means a budget getaway. Often, weekend packages, which include recreational activities and several meals, are priced at over $1,000. It is no doubt that a trip to the Ranch is an investment in health and intimacy.

#3   ACE Hotel, Palm Springs, CA

Once a mid-century Howard Johnson motel, the ACE Hotel of Palm Springs is a practical example of why “reuse” comes before “recycle” in the green dictionary. The old motel was repurposed into the newest, trendiest spot in Palm Springs with little to no demolition.

The ACE has turned carports into patios, an average pool into a luxurious night hangout, and blah-into-fabulous throughout the rooms and common areas. Aside from it’s stylish and sustainable amenities, the ACE provides guests with top shelf relaxation elements.

“It happens to be the best place in Palm Springs to get a laid-back massage or natural spa treatment”. - ACE Hotel.

Situated in downtown Palm Springs, the ACE offers a great deal of shopping, gallery hopping, and nightlife opportunities within walking distance. It is also close to famed natural sites such as Joshua Tree, the Salton Sea, and all kinds of historic desert modern architecture.

The bohemian-chic vibe and design of the ACE extends to “budget” pricing for basic accommodations. A spacious king-bed room can be rented for less than $130 per night on most nights. Oh, and you can bring your dog too.

#4   Casa Ojai, Ojai, CA

While the acclaimed Ojai Valley Inn and Spa is unquestionably one of the most romantic   getaways and wedding sites in California, Casa Ojai offers the same unbeatable Ojai experience at a fraction of the price and footprint. Recently receiving a 3 Green Eco-Leaf Rating from iStayGreen.org, Casa Ojai demonstrates a steadfast commitment to sustainable hospitality.

Guests at Casa Ojai will enjoy a spacious, relaxing guest room in the heart of downtown Ojai. The city is a naturalist’s paradise featuring tree-lined bike trails, permaculture sites, fabulous dining, and other activities synonymous with relaxation. Bicycles of Ojai has daily and hourly rentals available so that visitors can participate in the local’s preferred mode of transportation. The “act local” philosophy is firmly rooted in the Ojai way of life. As such, the city has remained virtually untouched by corporate stores and services.

Casa Ojai runs just under $100 per room during the week with a fair increase for the weekend. If you can’t afford the Ojai Inn but want to experience this gem of a city, consider the charming Casa Ojai. Besides, you can always spoil your Valentine with a massage or meal at the Inn during the trip.

#5    City Center, Las Vegas, NV

I know what your thinking: Las Vegas? Green? Truth be told, Las Vegas does not make the list for best green destinations in-and-of-itself. Yet, if you are planning a splurge to Sin City this February, the newly opened City Center offers a plethora of architectural masterpieces, five star restaurants, and Vegas’ full-spectrum of entertainment - all built to the highest standards of sustainable building.

The 16,797,000 square feet City Center project received six Leadership on Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Gold Certifications making it one of the largest LEED projects in the world.

Although the City Center is visually stunning and a true work of art, the accommodations, dining, and shopping are undoubtedly high-end. A weekend trip to the City Center - and Las Vegas for that matter - could easily be the most expensive option on this short list.

Honorable Mention: Good Ol’ Camping

If the short list is too expensive or lavished for your taste, consider the most earth-friendly lodging of all - tent camping. Although this season may bring chilly nights, the Los Padres and Sierra National Forests offer some of the nicest camping in the country - if not the world.
