“The Masked Songbird” by Emmie Mears is an action-packed thrill ride, perfect for enjoying by the pool, at the beach, or in air conditioned comfort. Set in Scotland, this debut novel features solid characters and great storytelling. Available on its own and as part of the Harlequin e box set, “Paranormal Romance and Urban Fantasy Volume 2,” “The Masked Songbird” should not be missed. A sequel is already in the works.

“The Matchmaker” by Elin Hilderbrand is set in Nantucket and follows Dabney Kimball Beech, as she gets a second chance with the one that got away. Author Hilderbrand, a beach read writing machine, has written thirteen novels and counting. Be warned, some readers may find this bittersweet story a bit depressing, so you might want to save it for the end of summer, or early fall.

“A Shiver of Light” by Laurell K. Hamilton is the most recent installment of the Merry Gentry series. This paranormal romance featuring the ex-private detective/faerie princess will not disappoint die-hard fans. Some readers may complain of repetition and a light plot, but relax, it’s the summer. If you’re looking for weightier reading material, pick up “War and Peace.”

“Euphoria” by Lily King follows three anthropologists in the 1930s and their adventures in New Guinea. Based loosely on the experiences of anthropologist Margaret Mead, this beautifully written historical novel is captivating. The author creates a lush landscape with vivid characters and complicated relationships in this remarkable page turner.

“I Am Having So Much Fun Here Without You” by Courtney Maum tells the story of Richard Haddon, a successful British artist, unfaithful husband and father. He tries to win back his French wife, Anne, and reinvest in family life after his affair with an American woman ends. Set in Paris and London, this debut novel is a witty and thoughtful look at love and marriage.
