An appetizer can set the tone for the entire meal. If it's bad the mood may continue throughout but if it's good...the diner's mind becomes excited for what's to come. Here Examiner.com's top 5 Jacksonville appetizers:
5. Top shelf guacamole at Cantina Laredo-This appetizer takes guacamole to the next level. We get this every time we go to Cantina Laredo and feel that it's a requirement for the proper Cantina experience. The waiter comes to the table with a tray of fresh ingredients like jalapenos, limes, cilantro, tomatoes, and avocado. Diners can pick and choose from these ingredients. Next, the waiter puts Cantina's special spices in the bottom of the mortar bowl and prepares the appetizer before your eyes. The result is some of the freshest and delicious guacamole we've ever had.
4. Cheese plate at Orsay-A decidedly "high brow" appetizer, the "plate du fromage" should please most pallets. Orsay offers their patrons a wide variety of cheeses to kick start their taste buds. The cheese is served with grapes and a variety of crackers and bread. We recommend the cana de chambre and the briallate, for $4 each.
3. Lobster mac and cheese at Eleven South-This unique appetizer has truffled goat cheese rather than the yellow Velveeta you may have had as a kid. For $13, diners at Eleven South can enjoy this delicious appetizer. A nice white wine like the Eroica Riesling by Chateau St. Michelle ($36 per bottle) would pair nicely.
2. Lakanilau roll at Roy's-We consider this the best sushi roll in Jacksonville. Even better than Wasabi. This roll has snow crab in the middle along with tempura asparagus, avocado, sesame miso and truffled greens on the top. On the top, the chef places high-quality strips of seared Wagyu beef and a sweet soy sauce. Truly not one to miss.
1. Cast iron seared jumbo blue crab cake at Azurea-Surely, one of the very best in Jacksonville, Executive Chef Ted Peters' crab cake creation takes the top spot. This succulent crab cake is filled with red and green peppers and is served on a bed of apple cider braised collard greens.
