With Valentine's Day just around the corner, it's a good time to reflect on some of the most moving, and sometimes tragic, love stories found in video games.
3. Cloud and Aerith
The saying "You don't know what you've got 'til it's gone" rings true in Final Fantasy VII. Spoiler Alert: Aerith's death is probably the most unexpected, yet emotionally jarring sequences in video game history. Although FFVII wasn't the first video game to kill off a major character, the player had invested hours into building up Aerith's skills, investing in her equipment and so forth. Heck, if the player took her out on a date during the Golden Saucer sequence, I'm sure her death scene brought tears. Her death was the catalyst for the events in the second half of the game, and her tragic ending still leaves a bittersweet taste in gamer's mouths to date.
2. Ash and Pikachu
Who says a love story has to be about intimate relations? Any pet-lover would argue that the bond between a owner and their pet is not only sacred, but eternal. Although early adopters of the Pokemon franchise weren't able to choose Pikachu in either Pokemon Red or Blue, that was remedied in Pokemon Yellow. In the television series, Ash and Pikachu sent a precedent on how Pokemon trainers should respect and treat not only their own Pokemon, but others as well.
1. Mario and Princess Peach
There's nothing more flattering that persistence, persistence, persistence. One of the first true console video game love stories, Mario set to rescue his princess from the onset of his adventures, and he never stopped, no matter the cost. In fact, decades later, he's still attempting to save Princess Peach. However, in a swap of fortunes, Princess Peach actually has to save Mario in her Nintendo DS adventure Super Princess Peach. Although the game was met with little fanfare, it goes to show that true love is reciprocal and that even plumber's need saving from time to time.
