Pets can take a lot of work. Little Rover will require expensive vet visits, excessive food and heartworm prevention medication. But that’s not all he will ultimately need. Someone has to clean up after him, which is not a pretty job no matter what the pet in question turns out to be and some attention must be paid to our little ball of fur. So, your bundle of joy walks past a pet store and says, “Mommy, I want a dog.” What do you do? Believe it or not, having a pet can be very beneficial. Here are the top 3 reasons you should consider getting your child a pet.
- Pets will get your children outside more and help your children with exercise. Especially if you have a dog, they will need to be walked and exercised from time to time.
- Owning a pet can help reduce stress and anxiety. Sometimes just cuddling with a pet can make your child feel loved and safe. When life gets you down, there’s nothing like the unconditional love of your favorite pet.
- It teaches your kids a little responsibility. Cleaning up, feeding, bathing and getting water for a pet can be hard work but it will certainly give them the feeling of accomplishment. They will watch their little pet flourish as they train and love this animal. It will build up their confidence and self-esteem.
So, you can relax and know that you are doing the right thing. If your child wants a pet, you can give in and allow it. Just make sure they know that they are responsible for its wellbeing and upkeep and supervise from afar. They may even surprise themselves.
