You get home from work, plop down on the couch and let out a sigh. As you begin to kick off your shoes your son or daughter says, “Mom, open house starts in ten minutes.” Another sigh escapes as you stare into the hopeful eyes of your expectant kiddo. You smile, stand up, and grab your coat. Why is it so important for you to go to one of these events? Here are the top three reasons you should go to your child’s open house.
- Find out what the teachers have to say about your youngster. This is very important. Your child may be off task or not following directions. You want to know if he or she is doing their homework and if the teacher is satisfied with his or her work ethic. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and remember to give praise when praise is due.
- Listen to what other students have to say about your child. Sometimes hidden secrets will be revealed quite accidentally. You may even find out about other issues like bullying or teasing that might be occurring. Keep your eyes and ears open.
- Meet the teachers and the principals. Visibility is important. If they know you are participating in your child’s education, they will be more responsive to your needs. They will know who you are and who your child is if and when you ever contact them about an issue or a concern. Putting a face with the name can make all the difference.
So, shake off your day and head on out to the open house at your child’s ISD. You may be surprised at what you might learn.
