Everyone’s been struck by the many quotable quotes from “Sex and the City”. The episode plots and deeper subplots were relatable to all single women – and single men. Watching each of the main characters struggle though their chosen romances felt personal…because it was. We’ve all been there at one time or another, but without the luxury of talented writers to craft our replies, we verbally fumble to express the thoughts that seemed to flow so naturally from Carrie, Miranda, Charlotte, and Samantha.
“Maybe the past is an anchor holding us back. Maybe, you have to let go of who you are to become who you will be.”
--Carrie
Repeating unhealthy patterns and choices begins to feel like a long lesson that never gets learned. Over and over we default to the familiar, albeit dysfunctional behaviors. Carrie’s profound observation causes us to reconsider and reroute ourselves toward new and uncharted paths. The innate hopefulness of the sentiment allows us to feel change, at any point in life, is still possible.
“I love you, but I love myself more.”
--Samantha
Rebuilding a relationship after a betrayal is one of the toughest moves in the book. Once trust is breached, suspicion seems to linger in the air forever. Samantha’s sentiment hit our hearts hard; she gave her romance with Richard a second chance, only to realize that she was never going to feel comfortable again. In the end, she opted for herself; a brave, unprecedented, and admirable maneuver that both men and women should follow.
“I’m looking for love. Real love. Ridiculous, inconvenient, consuming, can’t-live-without-each-other love.”
--Carrie
Ah, the Holy Grail. The never-ending hope and continual search for “the one”, the soulmate, the “worth the wait” person who will make us feel like all those bad dates and break ups were purposeful. Carrie sums up the quest in one succinct, thought-provoking sentence. Settling for less than the real deal would feel like you’ve cheated yourself out of the best experience you can have in life. Recognizing and connecting with your destined paramour would mean that the world is not random, rather it’s a precisely orchestrated medley of events with a fairy tale ending. Here’s hoping!
