What is more frustrating than watching a sequel to one of your favorite movies or franchises only to be so utterly disappointed that you are literally left speechless? You scratch your head and try your best, but ultimately fail, to think of a way the filmmakers could have done worse. We’ve all been there.
Too often the desire to bank on a series’ financial success drives the movie industry to continue to put out sequels until the inevitable happens: total and complete failure. Usually, this means the end of the series. All it takes in most cases is a box office bomb to realize the money train has jumped the tracks. Occasionally, even after a horrendous sequel, someone tries to bring the franchise back from the dead. Most times they meet the same result as the previous flop.
The following Top 10 list is based on several factors: financial losses, variance from the original(s), fan outrage, and even just a general “bad movie” review. These are the factors used, but to different degrees for each film. And, yes, there are a couple that are actually prequels, but since they came out after the originals, they made this list.
So, without further ado, here is the worst of the worst, the “baddest” of the bad, the “Oh my God, I hope whoever had the idea for this film never has kids because stupidity is hereditary”…Top 10 Worst Movie Sequels of All Time:
Click on the title of the film for a profile of the movie, including why it earned a spot on this list, and a video of the trailer and maybe more (will stay in the same window).

what no Blair Witch 2, Book of Shadows?
Beverly Hills Cop III was, by far, the most horribly bad movie I have ever seen.
Superman III belongs on this list. Besides being a terrible movie to what was a good franchise up that point, it features a horribly miscast Richard Pryor. It was a bad casting decision from the outset and could never have worked. Superman as a film franchise has never recovered from that.
Teen Wolf, Too.
Enough said.
Alien 3
Slapshot II was horrible. It didn't have hardly any of the original cast (the Hanson Brothers had a bit part later in the film) and had Keaneau Reeves in the lead (he definitely can't replace Paul Newman).
men in black II
ALL of the Mission Impossible movies sucked the big one! But then ANY movie with Tom Cruise sucks on general principle.
Smokey and the Bandit 3.
Not a great list IMO - Exorcist II - horrible film, Sting II - Mac Davis... enough said. And I can't help but agree with Blair Witch 2 and Superman III
The Sum of all Fears (prequel to Tom Clancy's Hunt for Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present Danger)
Ben Affleck sure as hell ain't no Jack Ryan.
Also thought "Weekend at Bernies II" while stupid, was pretty entertaining.
*snicker, snarf* Rock & Roll Wrestling Women Vs The Aztec Mummy, sequel to R&RWW Vs. The Aztec Ape. (...now goes off to laugh uproariously and spook the native populace...)
Oh, and Porky's II. Can't forget that one, though I'd dearly love to.
Don't forget Meatballs 2
Slap Shot II
It's amazing--all of the worst sequels in the entire history of motion pictures came out in the last 21 years!
Tim,
Sequels started sucking in the last couple decades due to the drive to bank on a success...why do you think there are no original ideas being made into movies now and everything is a remake/revamp/sequel/prequel/spinoff.
Hollywood is afraid to take a chance when they know they can make some money even if these are horrible just due to the success of the previous film.
But, there may be some bad ones before that...gives us examples.
What?! Hello! Baby Geniuses 2!
Baby Geniuses 2 doesn't count because the first one was gawd awful, too. It takes a large gap.
I wish writers would stop and think before publishing an article. Star Wars: Episode I The Phantom Menace was a bad prequel not a bad sequel.
Ryft,
Read the article:
"And, yes, there are a couple that are actually prequels, but since they came out after the originals, they made this list."
