Now that ABC has officially announced the new cast and pro pairings for season 11 of Dancing With the Stars, here are the top 10 reasons to love this season that debuts on Monday, September 20th.
1. The return of Bruno Tonioli: As any true Dancing With the Stars fan can attest, Bruno Tonioli is one of the reasons we all tune in to DWTS every week. He may be a little bit crass at times, but his comments and critiques are usually spot on. Who can forget when he told Kate Gosselin last season, “Dahling, I think Tony could have more life with a frock on a coat hanger.” That’s great stuff, people.
2. Mike “The Situation” Sorrentino: Yes, it’s fun to hate the cast of Jersey Shore for their bubble-headed G-T-L (gym, tan, laundry) lifestyle, but watching “The Situation” answer to strong-willed Karina Smirnoff should be entertaining. You almost want “The Situation” to fail, but on the other hand, you hope that he surprises everyone (including Snooki) and does really well. Just like Kate Gosselin last year, “The Situation” is one of season 11's most controversial characters.
3. Jennifer Grey and Derek Hough: What, “Baby” from Dirty Dancing has no previous dance experience? That’s like saying that the Pope isn’t Catholic. However, what has Grey done since her sexy and blockbuster spin with Patrick Swayze? If anyone can get Grey to move again, it’s Derek Hough, who was partnered with champion Nicole Scherzinger last season. This is a great pairing and team Grey/Hough should do very well this season.
4. Bristol Palin and Mark Ballas: Yes, many fans have complained that they have no idea why Bristol Palin is even on Dancing With the Stars in the first place, but it’s all about ratings, people. Bristol is very controversial because of mom Sarah and her rollercoaster relationship with Levi Johnson. Plus, Bristol has said that she agreed to do Dancing With the Stars to get away from the drama in Alaska. Sure, there’s never any drama on DWTS. Yeah, right. One has to hope that straight-laced Mark Ballas can reign in his new partner. Whatever. The dynamics of Bristol and Mark should be fun to watch.
5. The Celeb-Aquarium is Back! Remember when the celebrities were sequestered in some unseen room while their fellow competitors had their turn on the dance floor? Well, on season ten, the Celeb-Aquarium was introduced, and it was a great way to watch how the celebs and pros reacted to their competition. Well, it’s back this year, which is good news for DWTS fans.
6. Carol Brady hits the dance floor. Who could resist watching Florence Henderson do the Cha Cha Cha and Paso Doble? The 76-year-old actress of Brady Bunch fame laces up her dance shoes and partners with Corky Ballas to compete this season. I’m sure Greg, Marcia, Peter, Jan, Bobby and Cindy will be very proud.
7. Kym Johnson is back. After winning the mirror ball trophy with Donny Osmond in season nine, Kym stepped away from DWTS during season ten. Well, she’s back and has been partnered with David Hasselhoff. Kym first appeared on DWTS in season three when she was paired with Jerry Springer. Her other past partners include Joey Fatone, Mark Cuban, Warren Sapp and David Alan Grier.
8. Kurt Warner versus Rick Fox. Athletes have always done well on Dancing With the Stars, and season eleven features two: football great Kurt Warner and retired NBA player Rick Fox. It should be interesting to see these two athletes go head-to-head on the dance floor this season as their competitive spirit kicks into high gear.
9. The return of Lacey Schwimmer. Sassy Lacey Schwimmer has always been a favorite dance pro on Dancing With the Stars. She took a season off last year, but she’s back and partnered with Disney Channel star Kyle Massey. Schwimmer actually made a cameo appearance on Disney’s The Suite Life of Zack and Cody, so she should be able to relate well to her young partner this season. However, Lacey’s no pushover and trains hard. One has to hope Massey is up for the challenge.
10. The male pros on DWTS. The male professional dancers make it so easy to watch Dancing With the Stars. This season Mark Ballas, Derek Hough, Louis Van Amstel, Tony Dovolani and Maksim Chmerekovskiy head into a brand new season of bare chests and sexy moves. You gotta love this show.
