The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (PPACA) officially launched nationwide on Tuesday Oct 1st, 2013. Since Wednesday there have been primarily negative reviews of the new Exchange system due to poor Marketplace performance. [see Forbes article] Unexpected hold times, website crashes and delays, as well as unexpectedly high monthly premiums have prompted public outrage and frustration. Therefore, as a licensed health insurance agent and fellow consumer, I would like to present a helpful list of options to those individuals who are attempting to purchase a new "Obamacare" plan at this time.
Please note that for legal and ethical reasons I am neither endorsing nor recommending any of these options to anyone, anywhere, of any age, within any of the United States or it's territories. (Mexico, Puerto Rico, or the Virgin Islands)
Drumroll please ...
TOP 10 OBAMACARE OPTIONS
#10. GO TO THE MOVIE THEATER
(If you're going to be staring at a screen for hours, it might as well as be enjoyable. "Cloudy with a chance of Obamaballs" anyone? anyone?)
#9. TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR ABOUT PAYING IN CASH
(Like Siegfried's lion, he's tired of jumping through hoops. Less paperwork + quicker payment = favorite new patient)
#8. VISIT YOUR LOCAL FARMER'S MARKET
(Fruits & veggies taste better, the farmers need the money, and you need to eat healthier to be healthier so you can avoid going to the doctor in the first place)
#7. CALL OLD FRIENDS AND RELATIVES
(Make amends, reminisce about the good ol' days, share a few laughs; "A merry heart doeth good like a medicine" - Proverbs 17:22)
#6. READ YOUR BIBLE AND PRAY
(Meditate on God's word, pray for our nation's leaders, and maybe the Prince of Peace will give you peace of mind and wisdom to handle this situation - and isn't that what you really need?)
#5. SHORT TERM MEDICAL INSURANCE
(A great solution for some people who need coverage before Jan 1st and can not afford the cost of major medical. Plans range from 1 to 12 months, then you can renew or acquire a standard long term plan)
#4. WORK MORE HOURS
(If time is money, and you need more money, then put more time into whatever brings you money. Work, work, work. Money, money, money. Simple, Simple ... ah you get the point.)
#3. ASK FOR A RAISE
("You have not because you ask not." - James 4:2 so dialog with both God and your boss. Maybe a new position, or additional responsibilities will be required. That's okay. Inquire before someone else does: "What can I do to earn more while I'm here?")
#2. COMPARE "ON EXCHANGE" TO "OFF EXCHANGE"
(Did you know that you can still purchase insurance "off" or "outside of" the new Marketplace Exchanges? Yes you can! Ask your local independent insurance agent for assistance.)
#1. MARRY NANCY PELOSI
(I'm sure she's single and won't read the pre-nup 'til after it's passed.)
Remember - where there's a will, there's a way, and insurance is voluntary. The penalty for not having insurance in 2014 is 1% of your income or $95 - whichever is higher. If you want insurance, you have plenty of time: Open Enrollment is Oct 1st, 2013 to March 31st, 2014. Hope you enjoyed the list - now go have some healthy fun!
