Top 10 movies: Ice takes over theaters, ‘Frozen’ takes the box office

Temperatures were freezing this weekend, but the icy roads and wind didn’t stop movie fans from warming up at the theaters. This movie weekend only brought “Out of Furnace” to theaters as the solo new release. It was “Frozen” and “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire,” however, that brought in a large audience. On Monday, December 9, updated their charts to feature the top 10 movies this weekend.

Katniss’ flames began to fizzle this weekend, as “Catching Fire” finally gave up the top spot to another movie. “Frozen” stepped in to claim the number one seat with an estimated $31 million. “Catching Fire” followed close behind though, with $27 million.

As for the new release, “Out of Furnace,” starring Christian Bale, failed to draw in an audience. The $22 million budget film that also costars Casey Affleck and Woody Harrelson, debuted with $5.3 million.

Thor’s thunder is starting to give out, as “Thor: The Dark World” dropped to fourth place with $4.7 million. Domestically, the Marvel film has accumulated $193.6 million, for a worldwide sum of $610 million.
