Top 10 list: movies to mend a broken heart

We’ve all been there. At one time or another, you hand your heart over to the one you love only to face total rejection or circumstances that keep you apart. There are few things in life as emotionally painful as this. Often you feel like you can’t go on, or you will never find someone that is right for you. You may need some time to heal your wounds after love smacks you around like this. What better medicine for these pains than an escape into a world where the laws of reality no longer apply? A place where anything can happen at any time to anyone. A place where that nerdy guy always gets the beautiful cheerleader. But most of all, a place that shows us that even when we think life couldn’t be any harder, when we are down and out with our heart ripped out and tossed on the floor, that good can still find us. Maybe, all that pain happened for a reason. Maybe, it was just meant to help us grow. Maybe, the person that helps us through that pain is the person we were meant to be with.

That’s why movies are the best medicine for real life pains. As fantastical as they can be, often times they are more realistic than we think. Many times they can teach us valuable lessons or show us that just when we think we are at the end, it could really be just the beginning. Sometimes it’s not even that complicated. Sometimes, watching a movie just makes us feel better. So, fear not, broken-hearted one:

Here are the Top 10 Movies to Mend a Broken Heart. For a brief synopsis, more information and a video of the trailer, click on the title to see that movie’s page.

1) Serendipity
2) Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
3) Love Actually
4) A Lot Like Love
5) Jersey Girl
6) French Kiss
7) Return to Me
8) Catch and Release
9) Anger Management
10) Mr. & Mrs. Smith

There may be a couple on this list that may surprise you, but the reasoning for them is sound. Plus, there have to be a couple on there that aren’t sappy love stories. After all, sometimes, especially if you just had your heart broken, you may just need a good laugh or two.

There are many, many other great movies to mend a broken heart that didn’t make this list. What would some of your choices be? Let everyone know, leave some comments.

Great suggestions guys! I loved "Sleepless in Seattle" and "High Fidelity." Ali: I haven't seen "[500] Days of Summer" yet, but it's #1 on my Netflix queue right now!

    Thanks guys...keep 'em comin'

The Lake House was one of my favorite love stories. A good love story (with a happy ending) can give anyone hope that love can still be just around the corner.

Same Time Next Year. (With Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn) It somehow takes my mind off things, I don't know how it does it, but I have watched it so many times. :)

Hi Tom, thank you for this list! It is helping me get over an impossible crush I've had recently. Might I suggest the addition of two of my favourite romance-movies for a list like this: Before Sunrise, and the (even better) Before Sunset.
