Independent films kicked butt this year. Picking just ten was difficult, but I think I picked some really good ones. The list goes from 1-10, so the first film is the #1 film, etc.
Absentia-(Phase 4 Films) Two sisters come together to have big sister's hubby declared dead after he disappears and is gone for several years. Beware, of the tunnel that starts right outside their apartment. An excellent film that will give the creeps all the way through.
The Perfect Host-(Magnolia) Psychopaths are so fun.
The Music Never Stopped-(Roadside Attractions) J.K. Simmons plays a father estranged from his son. When his son gets very ill with a brain tumor, it is music that bring the two together. J.K. Simmons is one of the best character actors working today. In this film he takes the reins and hits the ball out of the park. Great Film.
Bite Marks-(Breaking Glass Pictures) This film goes from funny to funnier. It's vampires vs a truck driver and a gay couple having relationship problems. An excellent movie with some very funny one liners, some scary vampires and one confused truck driver. I love it!
The Dead-(Global Cinema Distribution) From funny vampires, to scary as hell zombies. Africa has been attacked by a plague that brings the reanimates the dead. There are no special effects, just some scary zombies that wonder the vast desert looking for the last few living people. Very creepy.
Grave Encounters-(Tribeca Films) If you want to call you and your partner 'The Vicious Brothers' you better serve up a really scary film. They did. This is the 'found film' format that I really love. 'Blair Witch is one of my favorite films (I sport some ink from that film). So basically some ghost hunters investigate an insane asylum. They try to MAKE things happen cause they never get anything real. However, they're in for a horrific surprise! IT'S REAL!
The Worst Movie Ever-(Driving With Our Eyes Shut) Don't let the title fool you. It's a hilarious film with things that just come out of nowhere to make you laugh. I love the filmmaker, Glenn Berggoetz, who is talented as an actor and director, writer, producer. I believe he mopped the floor each day after filming.
The Rift-(Gjenius Productions) Three decades of horrific happenings unfold before Jennifer's eyes as she digs deeper and deeper into the madness of the Town Creek Apartments. Past and present collide as this roller coaster ride hurls towards its final scenes. Along the way viewers get glimpses of carnage. Seriously twisted shades of the past travel through dimensions, reaching out to takes its final victim.
Red, White & Blue-(IFC Midnight) Two people's lives rush toward each other in an horrible collison that effects both of them forever.
Walk a Mile in my Pradas-(Breaking Glass Pictures) This is the story of reversed identities. A straight man becomes gay and a gay man goes straight due to a magical angel. Oh the fun that ensues.
There you have it, the best of the best. I can't wait to see what the new year will bring.
I want to thank the filmmakers, the PR people, the distributors and the studios for always being there with films to review. You guys all rock!
