Top 10 ideas for a romantic Valentine's Day in San Antonio

Are you thinking about bringing your Valentine to San Antonio for romance?

Excellent choice! The Alamo City is ranked very high on love meter lists for passion and desire.

The Daily Beast ranks San Antonio #1 on its list of the Top Best Cities for Love, while Travel+Leisure magazine places us at #7 for America's Most Romantic cities.

Here are some top romantic ideas to enjoy your Valentine in south TexasIn descending order, here are San Antonio Headline Examiner Jack Dennis’s list of the top seen romantic idea spots in in the area.

SAN ANTONIO RIVER WALK

Hands down, the most unique romantic spot in San Antonio, or all of Texas, is the River Walk.

A hand-in-hand stroll, a stop at any of the many patios and restaurants--with some wine, magarita, or other tasty beverage--is guaranteed to tantalize all the senses needed for love.

Colorful markets, sounds of water flowing and guitars strumming, happy fiesta-like barge goers, the spicy aromas of a variety of, and the timeless beauty of historic stone buildings and graceful archways makes the River Walk a premiere environment for Valentine’s Day.

ROMANTIC CARRIAGE RIDE

Make the evening extraordinary and memorable with a romantic carriage ride through downtown.

Bluebonnet Carriage Company is my pick because of their professional drivers and abundant respect that have for their horses. Their Valentine’s pampering deal includes a 20 minute private carriage tour, with cozy blankets for snuggling, professional coachman, long-stemmed Rose, and a box of chocolate for sharing.

MAJESTIC THEATER-HOUSTON STREET BISTRO NIGHT

Virtually every night is a Valentine's evening at Houston Street Bistro, because respected restaurateurs Razmik Boghozian and Mehrdad Ghaffari keep their attention on flavor, ideal service, and an always alluring presentation.

Lunch or dinner, you owe it to yourself to check them out at 204 East Houston Street, just a few doors down from the Majestic Theater.

If the Bistro is booked up because you waited too long to call for reservations, try Omni La Mansión del Rio’s AAA four-diamond Las Canarias behind the Majestic on College Street. Bohanan’s, Luke, or The Palm are also located nearby on Houston Street.

The Majestic Theater is my personal favorite date place in San Antonio.

February events include the Broadway musical the Blue Man Group, an accoustical evening with Reggae international star Matisyahu, and a Beethoven Festival.

ROSE WINDOW & MISSIONS VIA NEW RIVER REACH

Not much symbolizes enduring love as Pedro Huzar’s 1775 sculpture, the Rose Window, at Mission San Jose.

The La Ventana de Rosa is located on the south wall of the church sacristy. A North American treasure, Huzar was carving the famous window as a monument to his sweetheart, Rosa, who was on her way from Spain to join him. Sadly, Rosa was lost at sea, and Huzar completed the window.

Today it symbolizes enduring love. I recently presented my daughter the Rose Window ring my father gave to my mother in 1955, as a token of his love for her.

A new twist to on a Valentine’s outing? See the San Antonio Missions via the new Mission Reach trail by renting a bicycle at the Bike Share dock stations at Blue Star Art Complex.

Besides the Rose Window, be sure to check out the grist mill at Mission San José, and the 270-year old Espada acequia (irrigation system) with its dam and aqueduct.

COUPLES ROMANTIC SPA

My favorite romantic daytime romantic outing continues to be getting pampered at a couple’s spa.

Some of the best in San Antonio that I can attest to include:

Lantana Spa at JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort

Westin LaCantera Castle Rock Health Spa

The Woodhouse Day Spa on the Riverwalk

Mokara Spa

OTHER SUGGESTIONS FOR ROMANCE

Rent a limo.

Helicopter tour of San Antonio or Hill Country.

Romantic walks? Japanese Tea Garden, San Antonio Zoo, Botanical Gardens, Museum Reach of San Antonio River Walk.

La Villita escape. Stay at the Fairmont, Hilton Palacio del Rio, or other nearby hotels to enjoy the art, collectibles, and antiques of the historical La Villita. Fig Tree or Little Rhein Steakhouse are excellent choices for dinner.

Explore Southtown and King William area. Include Blue Star Art Complex on your trip.
