Top 10 dirtiest hotels in America

Yes, Housekeeping? There's a human in my bathroom (Image credit Cartoonaday.com)Air passengers seek comfort and convenience in choosing lodging as travel becomes more stressful. Making a Top 10 list is often a plus, but not the kind of list that drives business away. TripAdviser, the same company that gave us "Airline Passengers from Hell" has compiled a list that could be called "Hotels from Hell", and announced these findings on January 28. These are places that only Pig-Pen, Freddy Kruger or Norman Bates might appreciate.

In fact, as one guest put it in their review, "If you are filming a horror flick or a slasher movie, this is the place for you."

The sleaze factor in these establishments includes filth, hookers in the hallway, windows that are falling out of their frames, exposed electrical wiring, dirty sheets, bugs that would delight any botanist, and unpleasant staff.

Love the cartoon! The worst experience I've had with a dirty hotel room was years ago at a Motel 6 somewhere in southern Illinois. Maybe, as their slogan says, they'll "leave the light on for you," but at this establishment, it was better not to have the light on so you didn't see the dirt!

Great list, but which one has the hookers in the hall. lol j/k

My wife and i spent the first night of our honeymoon, headed to Lake Placid and Montreal, at a HoJo near the Albany NY airport. Breakfast included, locked entry to the registration desk, a wall mounted a/c-heater that shook thru the night. It wasn't overly dirty, but the plastic cups, warped bed and Leave it to Beaver motif was memorable to say the least.

I once stayed at the Thrift-o-tel near Urbana, IL (it didn't even acheive motel status...it was an "o"tel.) the lobby carpet had a worn down path to the concrete floor, we waited in a duct taped naugahyde chair, when we stepped into our room the shag carpet crunched beneath our feet and the sheets were covered in short dark curly hairs. But it sure was cheap!

I never stay lower than an 8! We stayed in a 6 by an airport once. It was so scuzzy that I slept in my clothes on top of the spread with towels put down. That's when we made the 8 and above commitment. Housekeeping standards in many places don't meet mine. A lot of places work on the "if you can't see it, don't clean it" principal. Ew!

My family stayed at the Dixie Motel somewhere in Texas many years ago when I was a teenager. We were on a small road by an error in navigation, for which I was blamed for falling asleep with the map. There were signs for miles on the roadside, but when we got there, it was awful. There was no where else, and we survived. It was worth it for the many years of jokes and teasing my father got out of it.

This is a great and fun article, and figures Ted would say something funny like that. Surprised it wasn't Marc. Most of the places I've stayed at have been good or great, but there was one in upstate NY that is near the unfortunately now-closed Catskill Game Farm that I will never forget...surprised anyone got any sleep that night......and a friend (soon to be former!) even recommended the place! Don't know what she was smoking.

The TripAdvisor 'dirtiest hotels' reviews are priceless... they all seem to involve bed bugs, prostitutes and horrific customer service. I don't think I'll stay at these hotels anytime soon!

I was at a Marriott in Palm Beach. I caught the cleaning person using the toilet brush to clean the toilet and then she used the same brush to clean the bath tub. I freaked out. It was the Palm Beach Gardens Marriott. This was about 7 years ago. I now put a towel on the floor of all bath tubs prior to showering. I spray all of the faucets and toilet handles and door knobs with antibacterial sprays as well as the TV clicker.
