Sunday afternoon also featured the return of Texan occult metal act Absu, who had been on a standing hiatus since 2003. Their roster was almost completely new, with the exception of the mainstay drum spectacular known as Proscriptor McGovern. Nevertheless, the band's current iteration recently released a well-released self-titled album and readily pounded through a mix of current material and now-classic tracks like “Swords and Leather” and “Highland Tyrant Attack”. The setting sun on the outdoor stage made for a performance that involved a lot of squinting and sweating, but Absu was not about to let that stop them. While the band as a unit displayed ferocity and conviction, the star of the show continues to be Proscriptor and his manic and unorthodox style of drumming that has given him almost legendary status in many enclaves of the metal underworld. The band's North American tour this summer should assuredly deliver more of the same.
