The website Nintendoeverything.com has confirmed another returning fighter for the next “Super Smash Bros.” titles. That fighter is Toon Link, and his return was announced on September 26, 2013. Toon Link’s original appearance was in the title “The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker,” where Nintendo opted to create a Zelda title with a cel-shaded graphic style (which was quite controversial at the time).
Toon Link’s only other appearance in a “Super Smash Bros.” title was in the most recent entry, “Super Smash Bros. Brawl.” Prior to that, the character Young Link appeared in “Super Smash Bros. Melee.” Toon Link has basically replaced Young Link at this point, as they both play very similarly. It is also easier to distinguish Toon Link from adult Link. Both Young Link and adult Link used a similar graphic style, though with differently sized and slightly changed models.
Toon Link is a light, fast fighter who hits opponents very hard. In the hands of the right player, Toon Link can be very hard to deal with thanks to his fast speed and the surprisingly long range of his attacks. He also fights very well in the air, thanks to very quick strikes that knock his opponents away easily. His special moves, where he uses a boomerang, bow, or bombs, aren’t the best special moves out there, but he makes up for it with his sword attacks. His recovery special, where he spins his sword in a wide radius, is a very good recovery move because it launches him surprisingly high into the air.
It is not yet known how much Toon Link has changed since his last appearance, so the above descriptions may not be relevant in the upcoming titles.
