Is Kim Kardashian feeling like Jesus Christ? Does she feel martyred? Or is she simply courting controversy -- again? The ever-ready-to-be-photoed Kim K might have gone just a bit too far this week. While in Rio de Janeiro, the reality show queen struck a pose for the cameras that was very Christ-like.
TMZ posted the photo of the "Keeping Up With The Kardashians" star Saturday (Feb. 9), her arms spread in an apparent attempt to emulate the famed Christ The Redeemer statue that can be seen towering behind her. Still, the famous-for-being-famous celebrity's pose was a bit off. With her head tilted to the side and her arms canted slightly upward, she resembled more the crucified version of Jesus than the statue in the background, whose arms are spread wide to accept his followers.
Is she trying to say something? All the press over her baby -- and questioning whether she and/or Kanye West will make good parents -- making her feel put-upon? Is she feeling crucified in the court of public opinion? Has she been taking PR advice from Chris Brown?
If the comments tracking below the photo on TMZ are to be considered, she's said something by her pose that has offended many.
Words like "repulsive" and "clueless" and "disrespect" litter the comments section. One written by Bob_Bitchin is hopeful: "Wish the damn thing would fall on her."
Another, posting simply as Carl, wrote: "I'm not religious and even I find that offensive to Christianity."
But as sacrilegious as some might think the photo to be, it truly is not. As one seemingly angry commenter (oddly enough, a "KIM") pointed out to the "ignorant": "Ok, for all the idiots who have never left the US, never left their trailer parks, hoods, etc. every single person that goes there take s a pick like this in front of the statue, there are many pics of other people that are right there with them taking the same pic..."
Although a bit crudely couched, KIM's (presumably not "the" Kim) comment was accurate. In fact, in the same photo wherein Kim K has her arms splayed, another young woman to her left (in an orange top) has her arms raised in what appears to be a supplicatory gesture.
To some, the photo will appear to be offensive no matter the context. Some will simply wish to believe that Kim Kardashian is that insensitive and narcissistic, that self-aggrandizing and attention-wanting. And others will go along with the idea that she's just plain clueless.
Like when she posted a diamond-encrusted handgun photo on Instagram last week -- during a time when the nation is embroiled in a battle over gun control legislation and the Second Amendment right to bear arms.
Like when she posted to Twitter a suggestion to pray for Israel, quickly followed, after a public backlash against her remark, by a similar post for Palestinians, which met with an equal amount of vitriol. She would eventually offer an apology for both remarks, saying that she only wanted to support those in need in the conflict (and was not taking sides).
But maybe everybody has it wrong. Perhaps Kim Kardashian, in a moment of insight where she realized that she will forever be a target for cameras, admirers, and detractors, simply threw out her arms in despair...
