Apparently David and Jason Benham are. HGTV announced last week that they would not be moving forward with the brother’s series “Flip it Forward.”
Following a post by Right Wing Watch which called the Benham brothers Christian extremists, HGTV posted on their Facebook page, “HGTV has decided not to move forward with the Benham Brothers' series.”
That post has received nearly 5,000 comments, many of them in support of the Benham brothers. Many more criticizing the rest of the content of HGTV programming.
LifeNews.com first reported that the reason was that the brothers are pro-life. Lifenews.com said “Home and Garden Television has decided to cancel the show after pro-abortion activists outed the brothers as pro-life. The pro-abortion group People for the American Way tagged the brothers as “anti-choice” extremists in an article on their web site and includes comments one of the brothers made about God abhoring abortion.”
But as more news came out, abortion was apparently not the only reason for cancelling the show.
According to Entertainment Weekly, “The twins are the sons of controversial evangelical minister Flip Benham and have a history of preaching against homosexuality, abortion, and divorce. While speaking at a North Carolina rally for a constitutional amendment that would define marriage only between a man and a woman, David Benham said in 2012: ‘We have no-fault divorce; we have pornography and perversion; we have homosexuality and its agenda that is attacking the nation; we have adultery … while the church sits silent and just builds big churches.’”
Conservative Christian blogger Matt Walsh wrote:
You’ll hear the media try to spin this as a decision made after ‘fan backlash.’ But no such backlash existed…Suffice it to say that a handful of extreme leftwing propaganda sites — ones that nobody reads and nobody cares about — put pressure on HGTV to cancel a show because the hosts of the show are Christian. HGTV gave into their demands without even the slightest hesitation.
Despite the cancellation, the Benham brothers are not bitter. The Hollywood Reporter says:
On The O'Reilly Factor on Friday, the brothers explained that HGTV had vetted them and knew of their conservative views about marriage and abortion, and that a deal was still in place until this week when activists "bullied" the network into dumping them. David Benham said there were no hard feelings and praised the free market that allowed HGTV to do what it thought best for its business.
"We're not victims. We're not crying," said David Benham. "Thumbs up to HGTV."
Jason Benham said, "We let them know that we love Jesus, that we love people and we love real estate and we are very good at what we do. And they saw that there was no hatred inside of us, for any people, any individual, any human being, and they knew we would be great fit for the network." [ABCNews]
The brothers have indicated that they were three days away from wrapping up the filming on their first house when they were informed the show was canceled.
