Tony Winning Comedy God of Carnage Opens at Florida Rep

Florida Repertory Theatre is pleased to announce the opening of God of Carnage, 2009's Tony-winning BEST PLAY and one of the hottest new plays in America right now.  Playing January 6-22, 2012 with discounted previews Jan. 3, 4, and 5,  2012 God of Carnage is a comedy of BAD manners where two sets of Brooklyn parents attempt to have a civilized discussion about their children's playground scuffle.

"God of Carnage is one of the most popular plays in the country this season," says Producing Artistic Director, Robert Cacioppo, "it took Broadway by storm in 2009, and Florida Rep is pleased to bring this exciting new play to life for Southwest Florida audiences.  It is a very witty, very funny, and very outrageous play, and I know you will love it.  It's all about bad manners and bad behavior from seemingly civilized adults - anyone who's driven on US 41 in holiday traffic can relate to that!"

Now a major motion picture (Carnage) from Roman Polanski, this multiple Tony-winning comedy from the author of Art is a hilarious journey through some of the most dangerous territory imaginable: Parenthood.  After their young sons get into a playground altercation, two sets of parents meet to discuss the problem over drinks and hors d'oeuvres.  What begins as a civilized meeting quickly deteriorates into a hilariously disastrous evening as the two couples battle for moral and ethical superiority.  Civility goes out the window and the gloves come off as the parents discover their animal instincts, and find that we're not so far removed from our caveman roots.

The production stars Craig Bockhorn, Carrie Lund, Chris Clavelli, and Shelley Delaney.  Both Lund and Clavelli are ensemble members with Florida Rep and are familiar faces on the Arcade StageLund was seen most recently in this season's Rumors and It's a Wonderful Life, and Clavelli appears after directing The Santaland Diaries.  He last appeared in last season's critically acclaimed production of August: Osage County.

Craig Bockhorn and Shelley Delaney make their Florida Rep debuts in God of Carnage. Bockhorn comes to Fort Myers from New York having appeared in several Broadway productions, including the revival of On Golden Pond and the original cast of Prelude to a Kiss.  Most notably, Mr. Bockhorn was seen in the 2001 Delacourt Theater's Central Park production of Chekhov's Seagull directed by Mike Nichols and starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Kline.

Ms. Delaney is Head of the Professional Actor Training Program at Ohio University, and has been seen onstage with some of America's finest regional theatre companies including the Cincinnati Playhouse, McCarter Theatre, GeVa Theatre, the Cleveland Playhouse, and many others.

Director, Dennis Lee Delaney, is making a reappearance in Southwest Florida after a long absence.  His work with Florida Rep goes back to the company's Sanibel roots with the Pirate Playhouse where he directed a number of productions including Other People's Money, Comedy of Errors, and Twelfth Night.  His Florida Rep credits include Sleuth and Mixed Emotions.  Delaney directs all over the country, and is the Head of the Professional Director Training Program at Ohio University.

Delaney is joined by an expert team of designers including set designer, Robert F. Wolin (King o' the Moon; Dial M for Murder), lighting designer, Todd O. Wren (Gaslight; The Devil's Music), resident costume designer, Roberta Malcolm (It's a Wonderful Life; Rumors), resident sound designer Kate Smith (The Santaland Diaries; August: Osage County), and resident stage manager, Amy L. Massari (Rumors; Sylvia).
