Stewart-Haas Racing’s Tony Stewart will miss the remainder of the 2013 season, Greg Zipadelli, competition director of SHR, said Monday in a team announcement. Mark Martin will drive the No. 14 Bass Pro Shops/Mobil 1 Chevrolet starting this weekend at Bristol and for all but one of the remaining races this year.
“After consulting with Tony’s doctors and speaking with Tony, we agreed it was best for him to focus on his recovery,” Zipadelli said. “For the No. 14 team, our focus is on positioning them for a run at the owner championship. Mark Martin and Austin Dillon (who will drive at Talladega) give us the best opportunity to do that, and we certainly appreciate Michael Waltrip Racing and Richard Childress Racing for making Mark and Austin available to us.”
Dillon finished 14th at Michigan Sunday filling in for the injured Stewart, who broke his leg two weeks ago in a sprint car accident.
Martin was scheduled to drive the No. 55 Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing in several more races this year. Brian Vickers, who is scheduled to drive the No. 55 full time in 2014, will take over the duties for 12 of the remaining races in 2013. Michael Waltrip, MWR founder and co-owner, will race the No. 55 at Talladega on Oct. 20 as originally scheduled.
Martin is one of the most respected drivers in the series and was leading the race at Michigan on Sunday when he ran out of gas with two laps to go after the team gambled on having enough fuel to get to the checkered flag.
