Tony Stewart may not make the Cup Championship this year

Can you believe that it has been a while since Tony Stewart, 3 time Sprint Cup Champion has not won a race? Of course, last year he had to deal with the broken leg he got while racing in a sprint cup dirt race. He admits himself that he has been off since early this year while everyone else had been pretty much caught up with the new Gen 6 cars. It has taken Tony a little while to get comfortable in his new cars, since most of the season of 2013 was lost to the broken leg.

You would think that a three time cup champion would be able to just jump in the car and win anywhere. This is not the case. The 2014 cars are basically the same as the 2013, but there are still new rules changes that were put in place for the 2014 cars. This past weekend NASCAR threw in another package change at Indianapolis. Tony was riding in on a lot of momentum after having a strong top ten finish and a few races that he should have won. He spoke about the races that he let get away... all because of speeding on pit road.

Since NASCAR has gone to a 16 team playoff Championship this year, you either have to win a race to be eligible or be inside the top 16 in points, and of course not have 16 different winners. If you can score enough points to stay in the top ten, you will be starting behind all the guys with at least one win to their credit. I would never count Tony Stewart out after what we all witnessed in 2011 when he barely got into the chase, but rolled off 5 wins out of ten races to win the cup for a third time. We'll have to see where Tony ends up this year, but he definitely needs a win in order to get in.
