Happy Valentine’s Day! I’m proud to report another only-in-San-Francisco moment: To celebrate the 50th anniversary of Tony Bennett’s recording “I Left My Heart in San Francisco”, there was a free sing-a-long of the song at City Hall.
In addition, the San Jose Mercury News reports that all local radio stations were asked to play the song at noon. The classic was also played over the public-address system at Union Square as well as Halladie Plaza.
I talk all the time about San Francisco’s “Tony Bennett” neighborhoods. These are the ones with the images that come with the song – little cable cars traversing this high-on-a-hill paradise. Here’s a YouTube video that shows the kind of places I’m talking about.
Tony’s own Belvedere home was up for sale this summer. No word on whether the 9,500-square-foot manse sold, though.
I have a soft spot for Tony Bennett. He’s just a tad older than my dad would have been today. My father loved old-fashioned standards and sang them constantly – always loudly, always slightly out of tune. My father was ravishingly handsome, unlike Tony Bennett – who is still a good-looking guy, actually. He just couldn’t measure up to my dad.
