Tony Finau update: Lehi resident is fourth after two rounds at Utah Championship

If Tony Finau keeps playing golf like he did on Friday, July 11 he won't be spending much time on the Webcom Tour. At the Utah Championship presented by Zions Bank Finau finished three strokes off the lead, shooting a 67 Friday to score to go with his 65 score the day before.

Finau, whose cousin Jabari Parker is lighting it up down the road this weekend at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, is probably not long for the Webcom Tour--a developmental league for the PGA Tour.

But while Finau is here he may as well enjoy it--and he's definitely doing so this weekend at the Willow Creek Country Club in Sandy, Utah. To open the only tournament he'll play in front of his hometown faithful, the former West High Panther shot a first-round 65 on Thursday, July 10.

His first round was filled with birdies, seven in all including five on the back nine and a near hole-in-one on the 18th to finish in a tie for second place behind leader Andres Gonzales.

On Friday with the crowd behind Finau from the outset, the Lehi resident shot for birdie on three of his first four holes--then cooled down, even hitting a bogey on the 18th hole to finish his first two rounds in Sandy with a second-round 67.

Finau's earnings of over $105,000 this year alone have him in contention to make the PGA Tour--and he could take huge strides towards doing so this weekend if he were to win his hometown's biggest golf title and collect the $112,500 grand prize. “Good position going into the weekend,” Finau said in the Deseret News article Friday. “That’s all I can ask for.”

With the first two rounds in the books, Finau has put himself in contention to win it all, a feat that even he hasn't managed to do on the Webcom Tour this year. Out of all the Webcom Tour tournaments this year, his best finish this year was fourth--a spot he's been in twice in 2014. Ogden resident Zac Blair finished at 7-under for his first two rounds, six strokes behind the leader.
