The Miami premiere of "Assassins," Steven Sondheim's Tony award-winning revenue-style musical comedy that focuses on the men and women who have attempted, successfully or not, to assassinate American Presidents opens this week at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in Miami.

The show, which opens Thursday and runs through Feb. 23 is a collaboration between the Arsht Center and the highly regarded local Zoetic theater. It will be presented in the intimate Carnival Studio Theater as part of performing arts center's the acclaimed Theater Close-Up Series.

"We're thrilled to co-present Zoetic Stage's production of Sondheim's "Assassins" - a provocative way to celebrate our first Broadway musical inside our Carnival Studio theater," said Scott Shiller, the Arsht Center's executive vice president. Characterizing the play as "A daring masterpiece from our greatest living theater composer," Shiller added, "We're certain Zoetic's stellar cast of acclaimed local actors and creatives will leave South Florida audiences in awe."

The show's history is as provocative as it's subject matter. It opened in 1990 off-Broadway where it ran for 73 performances, garnering mixed reviews. It then moved to London's West End, where the critic's embraced it. The play was slated to return to Broadway in 2001, but the opening was put off for three years due to the sensitivity of the subject in light of the events of September 11. The wait paid off, though, because when "Assassins" opened in 2004, the show won five Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical, and three Drama Desk Awards.

The show takes a look nine American assassins, including John Wilkes Booth, John Hinckley, Lee Harvey Oswald and Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme," wittily setting their stories against the musical styles popular in their day.

Tickets are $45.
