Tonight at the Stonybrook Cinemas, CARE the humanitarian organization dedicated to helping the worlds women, in partnership with Delta Airlines and the Meredith Corporation, is presenting a one night event inspired by the stories of the New York Times bestseller "Half The Sky" by Pulitzer Prize-winning journalists Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn.
The event is being held in order to increase awareness of the programs and efforts to fight global poverty by empowering women, as well as to celebrate International Women's Day.
"Half the Sky," presents the stories of women around the world and argues for the investment into the health and autonomy of women as a means to battling global poverty.
Tonight's simulcast will feature musical performances, celebrity commentary, as well as the world premier of "Woineshet," a short-film by Academy Award winner Marisa Tomei and Lisa Leone about an Ethiopian woman who was abducted when she was 14 and raped by a man in her village. Refusing to bow to tradition, Woineshet refuses to marry her abductor and is shunned by her village.
Other celebrity appearances will include: India Arie, Maria Bello, Diane Birche, Michael Franti, Dr. Helen Gayle, Angelique Kidjo, Nicholas Kristof, Marisa Tomei, Sally Lee, Sara Dutchess of York, and others.
Join the movement to help women and girls around the world turn oppression into opportunity tonight at the Stonybrook Cinemas at 2745 S Hurstbourne Pkwy Louisville, KY 40220. The event starts at 7:30 pm. For more information visit halftheskylive.com.
