Just how far would you go with your diet to lose a quick 20 pounds? Friday night’s show on Inside Edition showed just how far some are willing to go with the latest extreme weight loss fad called, the Tongue Patch. Beverly Hills plastic surgeon, Dr. Nikolas Chugay, claims he has found the perfect solution with his “miracle patch” aka, the Tongue Patch.
Dr. Chugay’s procedure involves a postage-stamp size of an abrasive plastic made of Prolene, a non-absorbable material, that he sutures to your tongue with a few stiches. The patch remains in place for up to one month, after which it must be removed before it begins to fuse with your tongue.
The idea is that you are so uncomfortable with the Tongue Patch that you are not able to eat any solid food, and as a result, you may lose up to 30 pounds in one month. Yomaira Zamora, a Venezuelan patient, said that, “The patch is as awful as it sounds. At the start you can’t even move your tongue for the pain. I’ve tried to eat solid foods but it’s impossible. It’s a huge inconvenience, but I’m doing it to feel better about myself. I was very fat.”
Along with the Tongue Patch, and exercise, Dr. Chugay prescribes to every patient a “strict 800 calories a day liquid diet that he sells in the form of a shake.
Dr. Chugay writes, “I see no harm in a minimally invasive procedure to help that overweight/obese person,” but Dr. Richard Chaffoo, a Board Certified California plastic surgeon, disagrees and told Yahoo!Shine in an interview, “Basically, this is a sham, an unethical procedure. With any kind of thing you put in there and suture it on to the tongue you run the risk of getting an infection…It could dislodge and go down your throat and cause an airway obstruction.” Dr. Chaffoo also stated that he knows of no other doctor who has performed this procedure.
To date, Dr. Chugay has performed over 800 procedures and states that after four months 70% of his patients have kept the weight off. As of this date the Food and Drug Administration has not approved this procedure.
