I chatted with Moi (vocals), Patrick (drums), Sean (guitar), Matt (guitar, vocals), Andre (bass) from Tomorrow's Bad Seeds. Hailing from Hermosa Beach, these guys played The Roxy after Smashing Pumpkins finished the street side portion of SSMF Saturday night. I caught up with them earlier in the day to get to know them better...
Sorry I missed you at Warped Tour...how was it?
Moi: It was a great opportunity. We aren't with a label, or a Warped Tour label, so we were very fortunate to have been included.
Did you do the whole tour?
Moi: No. Just the East Coast.
No West Coast love? What's up with that?
Moi: Hopefully they'll invite us back next year to do both.
Who were your musical inspirations growing up?
Matt: Bob Dylan as a songwriter, musician. I really like everything, Rage, Manu Chow-
You like Gogol Bordello?
Matt: Yeah.
They're heavily influenced by Manu Chow too. And you?
Moi: My Mother is my first inspiration musically. She could've been somebody but got pregnant with me when she was 19 years old. She opened for Sade when she was younger. I listen to everything though from Pennywise, to Black Flag, this new band I'm really into from the UK is called Entu Chakari. I'm into 112, Boyz to Men, and the whole four piece harmony thing.
Do you write the lyrics?
Moi: Me and Matt write most of the lyrics.
Andre: Alot of Reggae and Hip Hop. I got into Chili Peppers and Funk. Chili Peppers are my biggest influence. Bob Marley and Steel Pulse too. Everything I sing, I write and everything he sings, he writes.
Have you ever written a song for your Mom?
Moi: I'm working on a couple of acoustic songs...I put her in a couple of my songs, yeah. I took "Mama said there'd be days like this, there'd be days like this my Mama said" and put it in one of my songs I wrote "Mama said there'd be days like this when you'd feel the wrath of a woman's kiss". I take new views with old ones and mess them together.
Your influences?
Patrick: Seriously? My biggest influence is Guns n Roses. One of my friends growing up started listening to another band, AC/DC, and I was like "You suck for not liking Guns n Roses anymore". I never got to see Slash with Guns n Roses, but I saw him in Hollywood with Velvet Revolver. I went to school at MI (Musicians Institute) and they had a free show down the road, s I f*ckin went. It was awesome, amazing. I'm also into my parents music The Beatles, Led Zeppelin, and other old school stuff.
What's you're favorite song to play in your set?
Patrick: We usually close with this song "Warrior". That's a great one for me. I get to let go of everything!
Are you working on a new album?
Sean: Our second album just came out May 25th called "Sacred for Sale". It's, to me, a step up from our 2007 release. It's got alot of great styles and has been recorded well.
What's your favorite track on the album?
Sean: It's called "Reflect". It's got a great energy, a great beat and i think it best describes the style of our band.
What bands influenced you when you were younger?
Sean: Black Flag, Clash, all the Punk bands, then The Beatles, Zeppelin, then Reggae, and Dub Step.
I love your style because it's so eclectic, easy, and smooth.
Where are you guys playing next?
Andre: Nowhere around here for awhile. We head up the coast, but we'll be in San Diego Sept. 23rd and Hermosa Beach Sept 24th.
