During the Golden Globe Awards held on Sunday, Jan. 13, Kristen Wiig and Will Ferrell, while presenting the award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, lampooned the five nominees' films, including Meryl Streep, who played opposite Jones in a film about an older married couple, "Hope Springs."
That could be why Jones looked so acidic when cameras turned to him. "Merial Streep," Wiig said. "It's Hope Springs and she's that sassy sheriff," said Ferrell. The pair then put their hands on their hips and shouted, "I'm Hope Springs."
It was either perfect timing or just plain luck, as the camera cut to Jones, who looked -- well, you figure it out (above) -- while everyone around him is laughing wildly. You can see his scowl in the embedded video at around the 3:20 mark in the clip.
The 66-year old actor wasn't nominated for "Hope Springs," but was on hand at Sunday night's Golden Globes because of his film "Lincoln," which was nominated for seven awards, including one for Jones' portrayal of Thaddeus Stevens (Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Motion Picture; Christoph Waltz won for Django Unchained).
In addition to the viral video, which has over one million hits already, Jones scowl was turned into a meme. Strangely, it's been dubbed "Tommy Lee Jones is not impressed." We say it's strange because another recent huge meme was "McKayla Maroney" is not impressed, which the gymnast seems to have learned to milk, quite well.
After all, can't the Internet come up with a more original meme name?
At any rate, people are not just posting the scowl image, some have been linking it to another scowling meme, putting it up against another Internet sensation Grumpy Cat (as shown above).
