Tom Jenkin's is a local legend Broward County. Since 1996, everyone seems to know about it and the place has a line out the door every day during lunch. So, riddle me this Batman: What's so great at Tom Jenkin's shack? Mr. Jenkin's claims to put the Q back in barbeque. He has a simple menu, no substitutions, and his own special sauce. Is it really all that?
As you approach this log cabin with smoke pouring out of the roof, you get the idea that there is some good barbeque in this place. The place does not impress on looks alone. He has a few picnic tables with limited seating and sometimes not so desirable tablemates from the local construction and landscaping crews. The service is walk up only, and they act like they are doing you a favor handing over your money. Oh yeah, don't expect dishes or silverware here. Your meal comes in a styrofoam container just in case you need to go, or can't get a seat.
The food can be hit or miss here. Generally, the pulled pork, and ribs, are consistently good. The brisket, beef, and chicken can tend to be dried out and then require slathering in his sauce. His sides are very good, the baked beans, mac 'n cheese, collard greens, and corn on the cobb all pass the litmus test. The claim to fame is is his secret sauce. Slightly on the sweet side with a hint of vinegar and pepper. I like the sauce but some say it is too sweet. In any event, it is always served on the side so you can make the choice. Real barbecue doesn't necessarily need sauce and his pork can stand alone just fine.
I enjoy Tom Jenkin's and think it is one of the best pits in South Florida. Get there early for lunch and suck it up if you don't like company while you eat.
