On Wednesday, October 23 Comingsoon.net confirmed that actor Tom Hardy has been cast to play Elton John in the upcoming movie "Rocketman," which is a biopic about the musician's life. The film was first announced last year and production is expected to begin in the fall of 2014. The movie will be released internationally through Focus Features and will be directed by Michael Gracey.
Hardy was cast after months of searching, and even Elton John expressed an interest in having Justin Timberlake take the role. John will re-record many of his hits songs for the production, which is currently being written by Academy Award nominee Lee Hall. The movie will tell the story of John as he goes from a "musical prodigy to a music legend" and is being developed as a musical.
Hardy is most recognized for his role as the villain Bane in "The Dark Knight Rises," the final film in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy and as Eames in the science fiction thrilled "Inception." The English actor also had roles in films like "Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy" and "This Means War" with Reese Witherspoon and Chris Pine.
Elton John was born Reginald Dwight in England in 1974 and has become one of the most successful singer songwriters in recent memory. John has sold over three hundred million records during his careers, which spans more than five decades. He has won an Academy Award, one Tony Award, and five Grammy awards for his work in music, film, and theatre.
