Tom Cruise asked to leave seminary, says seminary pal

Tom Cruise attended the St Francis seminary in Cincinnati for two years in the early 1980s and was serious about becoming a priest, until he got the boot for stealing booze. At least that’s how Shane Dempler, his seminary pal remembers it, reports The Columbus Dispatch on March 5.

“He had a very strong Catholic faith,” Dempler told Daily Mail. “We went to Mass, spent time in the chapel and enjoyed hearing stories from the priests. We thought the priests had a great lifestyle and we were really interested in priesthood.”

He later relays the story that he and Tom Cruise, then known as Tommy Mapother, cooked up the scheme to steal booze from the Franciscan priests. Dempler reportedly broke in and tossed five or six bottles out the window to a waiting Tom Cruise.

After hiding the booze in the woods, a group of boys found out and snuck into the woods and got drunk. When they were caught by the priests as they staggered down the road, they boys confessed.

According to Dempler, the priests sent letters to both his and Tom Cruise’s parents explaining that even though they like the boys they preferred they did not return to the seminary.

The priests claim that Tom Cruise left the seminary when his parents relocated to New Jersey, but Dempler isn’t buying the story.
