Tom Clancy may have passed away but he is not forgotten. Loved by all ages from his novels to movies and even video games he will always be cherished in the hearts and minds of many. He died in a Baltimore hospital on Tuesday.
‘The Hunt for Red October’ star joined fans mourning the death of the thriller writer. Anne Archer, who appeared in two film adaptations of Clancy books, told the Daily News the author was 'an amazing storyteller.'
Alec Baldwin as Jack Ryan in 'The Hunt for Red October,' a film adaptation of author Tom Clancy's first book. Clancy, who died on Tuesday, was remembered by Baldwin as 'a great storyteller and a real gentleman.'
Thomas Leo 'Tom' Clancy, Jr. (April 12, 1947 – October 1, 2013) was a very accomplished American author best known for his technically detailed espionage and military science story lines that are set during and in the aftermath of the Cold War, along with video games which bear his name for licensing and promotional purposes. Seventeen of his novels were best-sellers, with over 100 million copies in print. His name was also a brand for similar movie scripts written by ghost writers and many series of non-fiction books on military subjects and merged biographies of key leaders. He was a part-owner of the Baltimore Orioles and Vice Chairman of their Community Activities and Public Affairs committees.
Tom was a longtime holder of conservative and Republican views, Clancy's books bear dedications to American conservative political figures, most notably Ronald Reagan. A week after the September 11, 2001 attacks, on The O'Reilly Factor, Clancy suggested that left-wing politicians in the United States were partly responsible for September 11 due to their 'gutting' of the Central Intelligence Agency.
Today, one could observe not stopping with the 'gutting' of the C.I.A. but also the mass effects on all government programs and agencies by the lack of leadership and negotiation resulting in the threats of shutdowns and resulting sequestrations. What do these rumbles in our government do to our economy and national security? Tom often cited the problems of today and tomorrow with the brilliance of his novels.
In recent years, Clancy associated himself with General Anthony Zinni, a critic of the George W. Bush administration, and has been critical of former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld as well. Clancy was also a Life Member of the National Rifle Association since 1978.
Clancy died October 1, 2013, after a brief illness at Johns Hopkins Hospital, near his Baltimore home. Clancy is survived by his wife, Alexandra; their daughter, Alexis; and four children from a previous marriage to Wanda King: Michelle Bandy, Christine Blocksidge, Kathleen Clancy, Ph.D., and Thomas Clancy III. The Chicago Tribune quoted Pulitzer Prize-winning author Stephen Hunter as saying, 'When he published The Hunt for Red October he redefined and expanded the genre and as a consequence of that, a lot of people were able to publish such books who had previously been unable to do so.' "It was a privilege to participate in two of the Clancy films and thus be part of his legacy," Anne Archer, who appeared in both "Patriot Games" and "Clear and Present Danger," told the Daily News in a statement. "Intrigue and suspense being my favorite genre, and having a brother who flew F4s in the Navy, I was well aware of Tom Clancy's vast and loyal following. He was an amazing storyteller and will be sorely missed. But his legacy will last forever."
Chris Pine, who's starring in the upcoming Jack Ryan reboot coming out in December, also said in a statement to The News: "Unfortunately, I never had the pleasure of meeting Tom, but I feel very grateful for the opportunity to bring one of his most beloved characters to life. His family and friends are in my thoughts and prayers."
The author passed away in a Baltimore hospital on Tuesday from undisclosed causes, his longtime publisher G. P. Putnam's Sons confirmed to the News. At the time of his death, Clancy had published over 25 books and was worth an estimated $300 million.
Clancy's espionage thrillers led to other film adaptations, including 'The Sum of All Fears,' starring Ben Affleck as Ryan, and 'Clear and Present Danger.'
Even the 'Gamers' will miss him as one posted this comment 'If you've only played the games that use his name, I seriously recommend you pick up one of his books in honor of him. They're fantastic.'
While best known for his work as an author, many of his creations were turned into video games including The Hunt for Red October, The Sum of All Fears and Shadow Watch. His impact on the video game industry blossomed when he co-founded Red Storm Entertainment in 1996 with Doug Littlejohns. The studio found its first hit with the release of 1998's tactical shooter Rainbow Six, which was even one of my favorites.
Clancy's death was first reported by Publishers Weekly and later confirmed to the New York Times.
