Tom Bergeron backstage at the 2012 Primetime Emmy Awards

The 64th annual Primetime Emmy Awards took place on Sept. 23, 2012, at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles. Here is what this Emmy winner said backstage in the Emmy Awards press room.

TOM BERGERON

Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition Program

(“Dancing With the Stars”)

You once said that you’d never thought you’d be on a dancing show. What do you have to say about that dancing show now?

It just goes to show you. Wasn’t it William Goldman the screenwriter who said, “Nobody knows anything”? [He holds up his Emmy Award.] More proof. I had no idea. It’s been one of the true pleasures.

What are the challenges you face when hosting “Dancing With the Stars”?

I would have to be making things up, because the truth of the matter is that it is the most relaxed part of my day. I love live television. They provide an incredible playground for me. The staff, cast and crew are without compare in the business, in my estimation. And so I am never more comfortable then when I am live on the stage on that show. Truly.

Which celebrity in the “Dancing With the Stars” all-star cast is your favorite?

If I answer that question, I’ll piss off 12 people. I’m looking forward to all of them equally.

Can you talk about Maksim Chmerkovskiy saying that he’s leaving “Dancing With the Stars”?

I talked to him yesterday. I said, “Is this it, buddy? My ass is free now? I don’t have to worry about being pinched?” And he said that it was taken out of context. At the end of his contract, which runs for two more seasons in 2013, I think, he’s thinking of pursuing acting and other things. And I fully understand that. But he’s going to be with us beyond this season.

“Survivor” host Jeff Probst has won this Emmy Award several times …

Yeah, and I wasn’t kidding when I thanked him for not being nominated. I think it helped me a lot.

Do you really think it made a difference?

Who knows? I was stunned that he wasn’t nominated, frankly. He maintains a consistent level of excellence at what he does, but it probably didn’t hurt. [He laughs.]
