It's summertime in the Glass City but the work behind the scenes to bring another exciting season of Toledo Walleye hockey. In between signing various players, new and old, the staff is busy preparing for the year including planning out events and other attractions. As of now, here's a sampling of what is known for the 2011-12 season of T-Town Hockey.
Player Signings
In addition to bringing back a pair of Kyles by inking deals with returning players Kyle Rogers and Kyle Page, head coach Nick Vitucci has been courting and signing fresh talent for the upcoming season. Among those slated to join the Fighting Fish next year include Canadian left wing Brian Matte, Canadian defenseman Dale Warkentin and blue-liners Phil Rauch and Matt Krug, both from Michigan.
While those players have signed to suit up for the Walleye in 2011-12, a few fan favorites will unfortunately not be back for another season. Former Toledo captain and Grand Rapids Griffins grinder Adam Keefe recently signed to play in Ireland with the Belfast Giants. He'll join previously announced signees Dominic Osman and David Phillips for the 2011-12 season in Europe.
FinFest 2011
Similar to in past seasons, the Walleye will open the year with a special event to kick off the year, FinFest. For the 2011-12 campaign, FinFest will be held on Saturday, October 8, 2011, prior to the preseason game against the Kalamazoo Wings. Among the activities at the Huntington Center include photo opportunities, special activities for the kids and appearances by the Toledo Walleye players.
This season's FinFest also has community twist. The Walleye have partnered with the United Way to help local non-profit organizations raise money as part of the "Fill The House for Charity" event. Tickets for the event will be on sale starting August 5, 2011.
Tickets for the regular season, including the home opener on October 15, 2011, against the brand new Chicago Express, will be on sale at a later date.
