The Toledo Walleye will launch their inaugural season with two exhibition games, team officials announced on July 6, 2009.
Preseason action will begin at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 10, 2009, as the Walleye take on the Cincinnati Cyclones at the Tam-O-Shanter Arena on Sylvania Avenue in Sylvania. Cincinnati comes off a successful 2008-09 season in which they topped the Northern Division standings and reached the American Conference Finals in the Kelly Cup Playoffs.
Game two features an inter-league matchup with the Walleye facing the Port Huron Icehawks of the International Hockey League. Puck drop is at 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, October 11, 2009, at the Team Toledo Ice House on West Alexis in North Toledo.
The choice to play these two games at local arenas, rather than the brand new Lucas County Arena, was intentional. Walleye head coach Nick Vitucci stated in a May interview that he feels "opening night should be the opening night, and not a preseason game," adding that he wants the opening night to be a special one.
While the roster is far from finalized, fans will get a sneak peek at the new team. These two games will be the last chance for several players on the bubble to prove themselves, as Vitucci will make his final roster cuts after these games. Teams have until 3:00 p.m. EST on October 15, 2009, to submit their final opening-day rosters.
Tickets for both preseason games went on sale Thursday, July 9, 2009, at 9:00 a.m. General admission tickets are $12 and can be purchased via the Toledo Walleye official website or by calling (419) 725-WALL.
