Just days after the free agent open tryouts, the Toledo Walleye announced their first player signing. Malcolm MacMillan, a center from Thunder Bay, Ontario, became the first official member of the inaugural 2009-2010 Toledo Roster.
MacMillan began his career in the USHL playing for the Thunder Bay Flyers in 1998. He joined the OHL the following season and spent two years playing for the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds. During those two seasons, MacMillan recorded just 34 points, but led the team in penalty minutes, totaling 271.
In 2001, MacMillan went to play for the Guelph Storm, helping them reach the conference semifinals in the 2001-2002 OHL Playoffs. Joining the ECHL in the 2003-2004 season, he spent the next several months being shuffled from team to team, with stops at the Florence Pride, the Peoria Rivermen and the Cincinnati Cyclones.
After a season with the Port Huron Beacons in the UHL, MacMillan settled down with the Reading Royals in 2005. He played in 128 games his first two seasons with the Royals, totaling 22 goals, 42 assists and a whopping 435 penalty minutes.
MacMillan remained with the Royals until 2008, including several instances when he was called up to play for their AHL affiliates. Most recently, MacMillan played in the EIHL for the Belfast Giants, tallying nine goals, 37 assists and 151 penalty minutes in 64 games in the 2008-2009 season.
Walleye head coach Nick Vitucci described MacMillan as "a warrior-type player that our fans will love," adding, "He brings energy and toughness to every shift and will contribute offensively. Malcolm was a player that I hated to play against while with the Reading Royals because of his tenacious work ethic and physical play."
MacMillan shared that positive outlook and excitement when asked about the signing, stating, "It is a wonderful opportunity for me. To play in a brand new facility with great fans will be a thrill. I remember playing in Toledo as an opponent and the fans are passionate. It will be nice to have them screaming for me instead of against me."
