Finishing out their three-game series against the Florida Everblades tonight, the Toledo Walleye were defeated with a score of 5-4 in overtime. The Walleye earned just two points in the series, with Florida taking six.
The Walleye appeared to open the scoring midway though the first period when Dominic Osman got the puck past Everblades goaltender Mike Morrison. The goal was however waived off after the official determined Morrison held it long enough to earn a whistle.
Toledo did however score the first goal of the game, just over three minutes into the second period. Jamie Milam got the short-handed score, with Evan Rankin and Adam Hobson getting the helpers.
Florida answered right back just over 90 seconds later as Ahren Spylo bested Walleye netminder Jordan Pearce. The scoring didn't end there, as Toledo's Justin Hodgman recorded his fourth goal of the season to regain the lead.
Second period action continued with Florida scoring two additional goals, as winger Jordan Morrison and defenseman Scott Hotham each connected to put the Everblades up 3-2.
Toledo's Tommy Lange came up with a big play late in the second, taking a pass from Brock Wilson on the power play to send both teams to the locker rooms tied at three.
Florida took the lead back early in the third period with A.J. Thelen netting a goal on the power play. But Tommy Lange was able to tie it up again for the Walleye, taking another pass from Brock Wilson on the power play. The score remained tied at four at the end of regulation and the teams went to overtime for the second-consecutive game.
The Walleye had good chances to win the game early in the extra session, but a penalty was their demise in the end. Walleye center Malcolm MacMillan took an unsportsmanlike call with just under two minutes remaining in the overtime. After arguing with the official, he was also awarded a 10-minute game misconduct, sending him to the locker room early. Florida's Scott Hotham connected on the man advantage to give Florida their third-consecutive win over the Walleye.
Toledo returns home and has the week off as they prepare to host the Cincinnati Cyclones this Friday, for the teddy bear toss, Buckeye-Wolverine Rivalry Night and a post-game party, and Sunday, which is kids night including a post-game skate with the team. Tickets are available by calling (419) 725-WALL, visiting the Lucas County Arena box office or ordering online.
